How to Choose the Right Baseball Glove

The right glove makes catching easier and builds confidence, especially for young players.

Size depends on age and position. Younger players typically use gloves around 9 to 11 inches; older youth infielders often use 11 to 11.75 inches, while outfielders go a little larger for extra reach. Catchers and first basemen need specialized mitts.

Fit matters more than brand. The player should be able to open and close the glove with one hand. A glove that is too big or stiff will flop and make catching harder.

Material is a trade-off. Synthetic and soft leather gloves are ready to use quickly and cost less; full-grain leather lasts longer but needs breaking in. For a growing child, a quality mid-range glove that fits now is usually the smarter buy than an expensive one they will grow into.
